Bookdate

chapt 3

As some of you will know, I have entered into the world of book writing. It is a very scary concept but also so much fun and I must say, it’s very fulfilling. When you write 1000 words or something it makes you feel good. I don’t know, it’s that feeling you get when you paint a picture that you’re proud of. Like giving yourself a pat on the back.

Anyway, I’m rambling.

I thought I would dedicate this post to where I’m at with my… Novel. (That word sounds soo good!)

It’s a scifi, space themed, humanoid, action romance. Which kind of sounds like everything in one, but trust me… it works, or it does for me anyway.

At the moment, I’m on chapter three and it’s going good. Though I feel as though I’m making things hard for myself because half of my story is on Earth and the other is on the ‘Purple Moon’. So like Game of Thrones does a chapter per character, I’m kind of rolling with the idea that I’m going to do a chapter per planet, which makes it less complicated. To show what planet we’re on, I was thinking of doing a sketch of Earth and a sketch of the Purple Moon and putting them under the chapter’s title so that readers know whether or not their in outer space. Just to give them a heads up – but that’s all aesthetics so it’s kind of at the back of my mind at the moment.

As I said in my earlier post about writing a novel this story that I have in mind has been part of my life for a long time. I think I was about 12/13 years old when it first came to life. I’d doodle the characters in the back of my text book and imagine great adventures for them to be getting up to, but all of this was just in my imagination and nothing ever came of it. So about a month ago now, I started to write down what had been in my head for all of these years.

It was terrifying.

I’d thought of so much that I could see loop holes and things that just didn’t look or sound right when they were on paper, but made perfect sense in my head. Before actually getting down to write this thing, I decided to make a plan. I mean, you can’t really go wrong with a plan and it meant that all of my story lines and thoughts were put in some kind of order.

So I have this plan, it’s 1000 words long and it is full of things that I’ve thought of and things I want in the book and just a really basic structure of how I want the story to look. There are currently 60 odd sections in this plan which I’m hoping to write around 1000 words for each one. Obviously it’s not going to be 1000 words exactly. Some sections will need more words than that and some a lot less, but that is my rough guide so hopefully by the end I will have a what is classed as a novel.

At the moment, I’m really pleased with what I’ve written… I haven’t edited anything I’ve done yet, this is literally a really rough first draft. My plan is to get everything down on paper and then go back and edit it all and go back again and back again, until I am happy with what I’ve got. I don’t know if that is what you should do, or if that is the right way to write a novel, but at this stage, I don’t want to get too hung up over what I’ve written and so have decided that this is what I think will work best for me.

The hardest part is deciding character names. I have one set in stone, I think… maybe two but they are open to change. To me names are one of the most important parts to get right as they kind of shape your character’s personality. Or they do in my eyes.

So that is where I’m at right now. Chapter three… Umming and ahhing over character names with a huge plan in front of me.

I know I haven’t really given much about my book away, that will come in time when I’ve written more and know that that is definitely the way my story is heading.

If you’re writing a novel yourself do let me know, we can be book buddies! I have already spoken to a few people who have accomplished writing and publishing their own books, and some who are just setting out. You have no idea how much it helps just to talk to people who are doing the same thing as you and how encouraging chats like that can be.

There will be more book updates and a lot more beauty and fashion blogs from me.

Until next time

Plans | Writing a novel

I don’t know how long you have been reading my blog for, but a very long time ago – way before I started getting into beauty and fashion reviews, I mentioned that I might start writing a graphic novel.

You see I have had this story in my head since I was in year eight – so around seven years now. Nothing has ever come of it, I guess the story has only really existed in my mind, and whoever I have told. But I have had seven years to mull over characters and watch this idea grow into something that I can no longer keep to myself.

I took a trip the other weekend to Leeds to see my sister, and I told her that I was thinking about turning this idea into an actual book. I did consider a graphic novel, but I can’t draw as well as I’d want the pictures to look, so my only other option is to turn it into an actual novel.

My sister said it was a good idea and introduced me to the site Nanowrimo, which basically helps you write a novel in a month. The month they’ve chosen is November and to be honest, I don’t think I could wait that long to get started.

When reading up on this site it makes writing a novel in a short time look achievable. To get your story officially classed as a short novel it needs to be between 50,000 – 60,000 words.

At first glance this looks impossible. But I’ve broken it down to writing 1,000 words a day and then in two months time hopefully I will have a first draft!

The thought of this is so exciting and so even with all of my exams going on and deadlines creeping up, I have decided to start writing and see what happens.

I’m currently on 4000 words which for me is an achievement just to start putting pen to paper (or in this case fingers to keys.)

I’m looking forward to seeing where this thing ends up and hopefully by the end of the summer I might actually be able to say I’ve written a novel!

Until then I will keep you updated throughout this journey.

Wish me luck.
