Spring Sunglasses

12966304_101540

Spring is finally here and that means so is the sun (which is debatable), but with warm weather slowly creeping in and summer on its way I have decided to splash out on some new sunglasses.

I’m always so fussy when it comes to purchasing glasses – I spend a lot of time in the shop posing in front of the mirror with numerous amount of pairs being placed on my head and then back on the shelves. They have to fit my face right and not only that, they have to be able to go with my outfits and lipsticks.

I tend to just reach for the circular shaped thick black rimmed ones. They’re always a safe bet and I know that with them being black, they will go with everything I own. However this time I went for something a little bit more out there.

From my previous blog posts, you’ve probably gathered by now that I am taking a lot of inspiration from 80s Madonna. From my hair recently being shortened and the impending need to always draw on my beauty spot that sits just above my mouth, I am completely obsessed with her fashion and trends that I’m trying to mimic them within my own wardrobe.

Every morning I am compelled to highlight my cheekbones, smother my lips in red lipstick and outline my eyes in thick black eyeliner. It has become my new look and I am utterly loving it.

So to match this Madonna inspired makeup, I treated myself to some Madonna like sunglasses.

Pair No.1

These I bought from Next and I think they are absolutely stunning. They’re black, so they go with everything, but on the inside of the frame they have a turquoise tortoise  shell effect on them, which makes them that little bit more special. I feel as though they fit my face fine and don’t look too big, however they are on the large side, but this is purely due to the fact that they are slightly cat-eyed and therefore are supposed to come off your face a bit.

With Madonna in mind, I feel as thought they are a more modern take on the sunglasses that she wore in Desperately Seeking Susan (an extremely good film to watch if you haven’t already – and it will make you understand why I am in love with the 80s Madonna).

Pair No.2

Now, I have never bought two pairs of sunglasses in the same day, or same season in fact! However I walked past these and HAD to get them. I’ve seen many similar looking ones in various vintage shops around the Norther Quarter in Manchester, however the ones I’ve tried on have always been a little lopsided on my face. But alas! These one’s in Debenhams fitted on my ears perfectly and so they were a must have. They are a bit more daring and I might have to rev myself up into wearing them out and about, but I absolutely love them. They are very retro looking and very plastic, which makes them quite groovy. Also, the colour is a slightly off shade of red, so aren’t too bright, but still hold a lot of impact. Not to mention the fact that they are pretty much the exact same shade as my lipstick.

I’ve been wanting these a long time before my Madonna craze came about, but I do recall her sporting some white heart shaped sunglasses in her Sticky Sweet tour.

Please let me know what you think of my new purchases… All I need now is the sun to wear them!

Have you bought any sunglasses in preparation for the summer?

Bandeaus and Tassels | Mini Haul

me3 (2)

It’s that awkward time of the year where you don’t know whether or not the weather is going to be gloriously sunny or miserable and rainy. Most of the time, you can expect it to be the latter. Because of this I wanted to introduce some items of clothing to my wardrobe that were ideal for layering in the cold, but also great to wear in the few warm days that we get.

Over the past few weeks I have purchased three tops that are perfect for doing so.

All of them are knitted or crocheted in some way which is awesome for when it is hot as they’re quite hole-y and so allow air to get in and out of them, but with them being crocheted they are made out of thick, wool like material which is pretty toasty when it’s cold out.

These three tops are gorgeous. All of them are flattering in their own way and I absolutely love the colours of them. Mucky green is becoming one of my favourite colours as I think it really goes well with the tone of my hair.

I’ve always been a bit unsure as to what to wear with semi see-through tops. I mean, you could just wear your bra underneath and it would still look good, but I’ve always been a bit self conscious in doing so. I tend to automatically go for a generic white or black vest top as they look subtle and just provide that extra layer of warmth. However, this year I have been experimenting a little bit more and have ventured into buying a black bandeau. I think these are great as you still get the full effect of the tops’ design, however protect your modesty whilst doing so. They’re ace with a crop top too, as vest tops are normally too long  and you awkwardly get the bottom of them sticking out – which I never know what to do with.

I really am loving this look at the moment. I just hope that the weather picks up so I can wear these tops some more!

Find the green and red top at H&M and the black one in TopShop.

Plans | Writing a novel

10968491_1579741498907001_9174218628978819467_n

I don’t know how long you have been reading my blog for, but a very long time ago – way before I started getting into beauty and fashion reviews, I mentioned that I might start writing a graphic novel.

You see I have had this story in my head since I was in year eight – so around seven years now. Nothing has ever come of it, I guess the story has only really existed in my mind, and whoever I have told. But I have had seven years to mull over characters and watch this idea grow into something that I can no longer keep to myself.

I took a trip the other weekend to Leeds to see my sister, and I told her that I was thinking about turning this idea into an actual book. I did consider a graphic novel, but I can’t draw as well as I’d want the pictures to look, so my only other option is to turn it into an actual novel.

My sister said it was a good idea and introduced me to the site Nanowrimo, which basically helps you write a novel in a month. The month they’ve chosen is November and to be honest, I don’t think I could wait that long to get started.

When reading up on this site it makes writing a novel in a short time look achievable. To get your story officially classed as a short novel it needs to be between 50,000 – 60,000 words.

At first glance this looks impossible. But I’ve broken it down to writing 1,000 words a day and then in two months time hopefully I will have a first draft!

The thought of this is so exciting and so even with all of my exams going on and deadlines creeping up, I have decided to start writing and see what happens.

I’m currently on 4000 words which for me is an achievement just to start putting pen to paper (or in this case fingers to keys.)

I’m looking forward to seeing where this thing ends up and hopefully by the end of the summer I might actually be able to say I’ve written a novel!

Until then I will keep you updated throughout this journey.

Wish me luck.

TopShop Summer Wishlist

This summer I have decided I want to revamp my wardrobe and turn it into something that little bit more girly. I’ve noticed that I’ve hoarded quite a lot of black and grey items which is all well and good for winter, but it just doesn’t look summery at all. I want to embrace frills and pastel colours, lace and flowery patterns. The other day I bought some gorgeous dark blue jeans from TopShop Tall which I think just take the edge of black jeans in the summer, creating a more delicate and feminine look.

I am loving the pastel colours at the moment and have just recently purchased a stunning bag from New Look in pastel yellow. (You may have seen it on my previous post!)

So today I thought I would put together a few items that are definitely on my TopShop wishlist this season.

Untitled  I already have one of these gorgeous frilled tank tops, however the one I have is in baby blue. I love it so much that I might just go and purchase another!

Untitled1I have never seen anything with jelly fish on before, so I just think this is a really unique cami and super cute!

Untitled2

For those summer showers, this is an adorable raincoat to throw over your shoulders.

Untitled3

And if you know it’s not going to rain but just want that extra layer, then this jacket is perfect just to pull on.

Untitled4I must admit, I haven’t owned a pair of black shorts for a long time, but this summer I think they will be a staple as black tends to go with everything and has a certain type of classy look to it.

This is my start to a summer wardrobe wishlist. I wonder how many items I’ll actually end up purchasing before the season is out!

Scars | My summer challenge

It’s getting to that time of year where everything is coming to an end. First year of uni is almost over for me, the holidays are quickly approaching and it’s always this time of year where I seem to find myself in a bit of a rut.

Exams are on the horizon, which is a very scary and very stressful thing. And it’s the time of deadlines and late nights revising which just kind of gets you bogged down anyway. But all of this just seems to be a way of life now.

The seasons are changing, and the weather is getting hotter. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love summer, but summer seems to bring my self-esteem down quite a lot.

I’ve noticed it in more recent years than I have in the past that I seem to get down quite a bit about my scars from various operations. Summer is a time when they are always on show and they’re always on my mind when planning an outfit.

In the winter you can get away with disguising them and hiding them under jumpers and roll necks, but in the summer when you’re wearing little low cut things and floaty tops, they always seem to be there.

It’s not that I don’t want people to see them, it’s just when they do I find people staring at them if they don’t know your history. Or in the past people have said cruel things about them, which hopefully wont happen now I’m not in high school but it still makes you a bit scared of having your scars on display.

Summer is also a time for crop tops and because of having my appendix out, my belly button still looks a little bit worse for wear even though it’s a year on from the op.

I also have three other scars situated around my belly button from the keyhole surgery which I must say, am a little bit self conscious about. Because it’s only a year, they’re still slightly raised and haven’t properly yet faded as much as they will hopefully do. But I’m kind of getting around this by wearing high waisted jeans, which sometimes leaves the scar on my belly button peeping out over the top.

Because of this, this summer I’m going to revamp my wardrobe a bit and force myself to be brave. I’m going to wear more girly things and try and not worry about what others might think or say about my scars.

It is a bit of a daunting thought but I’m going to set myself this challenge to try and overcome my fear of what other people might say to me. Because to be honest, they probably wont say anything at all. I just can’t help but feel scared and self conscious.

I do get down about them from time to time, and I just think this is one of those times.

If you also have scars, I think you should learn to love them. I’m not quite there yet, but without them I wouldn’t be here, so I wouldn’t really want it any other way.

Hair decoration ideas

I have this problem where I never know what to do with my hair.

It has gone through many stages:

I’ve had it in a bob, however I got bored because I couldn’t really do anything with it and so decided to grow my hair.

It grew to a certain stage where I looked very much like Miss Hoolie from Balamory and so wanted to chop it all off again. However I persevered and managed to get my hair a a reasonably long length.

I was really happy with it but found that with having busy and rushed mornings, I never had the time to do anything with it. I rarely put my hair up, I didn’t dye it any crazy colours and so again, I became bored.

This led me to chopping one side off, sporting the half pixie cut half long hair look. I absolutely love this hairstyle, but a part of me wishes that it was back long on both sides again.

Therefore I have come up with a few ways to spice back up my hair and give it some life again!

It’s really simple and anyone with long hair (or even short I guess) can pull this off.

I want to call it the ‘raid your house’ look. This is all I did. I went around my bedroom and found a few items that had no use and so I decided to put in my hair.

I found an old bit of material, I don’t really know why I bought this, it has been sitting in one of my draws for a very long time, but I have finally found something to do with it! I folded it in half and hooked it around a section of my hair pulling it tight so it sat firmly at the top of the section. Then with the two pieces hanging down I braided it with the strand of hair. It is so easy and yet so effective.

I’ve had a hand-me-down off my sister for a while. It is a bracelet that’s really colourful with bells hanging from it. When she offered it to me I couldn’t refuse and was surprised that she was throwing it out. However, when coming to put it on my wrist it was too big and just kept falling off. I don’t know why, but I couldn’t part with it that quickly and so it has just been sitting in my make-up draw for a few years. I came across it when hunting for something to go in my hair. It was the perfect length and size and so again, I braided it in.

I’m definitely going to be experimenting with this. Maybe next time I’ll add a few beads, or even some feathers.

I love this effect. It adds colour and dimension to your hair and gives your style a summery boho look.

If you’ve given this a go, I’d love to see your finish looks or for you to share some ideas of what I can decorate my hair with!

Hoghton Tower | It smells like Autumn

It has been a chilly day, and the air has smelt like autumn. The seasons are definitely changing. I love autumn, I think it must be my favourite season. I know summer is hot, but when you live in the UK the heat is a hit and miss thing anyway. But autumn is lovely! The rich colours, the crunchy leaves under your feet and the crisp morning air. Not to mention the clothes you get to wear! I’m a huge sucker for the scarf and hat look. When you can get all togged up, put on your gloves and coat, drink hot soup and feel looked after. It definitely is a cosy season.
So with it being on the tail end of summer my family and I decided to make the most of the sun and head over to Hoghton Tower. We didn’t know it existed until we saw it the other day on a television program and what a little gem it is! With it only being around half an hour away from where we live it was the perfect day trip out.
We managed to catch the first guided tour and they took us all around the house, even showing us the underground passageways. It was really interesting. There were rooms where The Duke of Cambridge had stayed, places where Last Tango in Halifax was filmed and the bed that David Tennant used in the recent film Casanova. King James I had even visited. The walled gardens of the house were beautiful  and with it being the third most haunted house in Britain it was really up my street (because of my recent obsession with the American series Ghost Adventures, but that’s another story!).

Here are a few photos of the day, don’t mind my outfit! It was jumper, coat and turtle-neck weather (definitely the change of seasons).
