Penny Lane inspired look

orig-21266470

If you have never seen Almost Famous then stop right now, find a copy, watch it, then return to this post. I must say it is one of my favourite films at the moment, mainly because it is set in the 70s. It has an amazing soundtrack, fantastic characters that are based on legendary people and the clothes they wear are to die for.

One of the main characters is Penny Lane… and I have been heavily inspired by her wardrobe. She is a free spirited, yet tortured groupie (or should I say ‘Band-Aid’) who is completely in love with the music scene and is going on tour with a band named Stillwater. Her character is portrayed by Kate Hudson and it has been said the part was written around the socialite and famous groupie Pamela Des Barres’ memoirs.

If you have seen the film you will understand how you instantly fall in love with her. She is extremely groovy, has great fashion and reflects the 70s how everyone seems to perceive it (I hope it was as good as it seemed!)

After studying the film and watching it countless times for one of my assignments, I think I have the Penny Lane requirements down to a T.

  1. You need curly messy hair.
  2. You must have circular sunglasses – preferably with a purple tinge.
  3. You most certainly need an afghan style coat.
  4. Your make up has to be minimalistic, but still there.
  5. A bra is not required and you cannot forget your suede skirt.

If you consider all five of these points, then you are well on your way to pulling off this look.

Here are a couple of photos of myself trying out the 1970s, Penny Lane look. (Do forgive the photo quality – I’m now back at university and the lighting in my room is terrible!)

Spring Sunglasses

12966304_101540

Spring is finally here and that means so is the sun (which is debatable), but with warm weather slowly creeping in and summer on its way I have decided to splash out on some new sunglasses.

I’m always so fussy when it comes to purchasing glasses – I spend a lot of time in the shop posing in front of the mirror with numerous amount of pairs being placed on my head and then back on the shelves. They have to fit my face right and not only that, they have to be able to go with my outfits and lipsticks.

I tend to just reach for the circular shaped thick black rimmed ones. They’re always a safe bet and I know that with them being black, they will go with everything I own. However this time I went for something a little bit more out there.

From my previous blog posts, you’ve probably gathered by now that I am taking a lot of inspiration from 80s Madonna. From my hair recently being shortened and the impending need to always draw on my beauty spot that sits just above my mouth, I am completely obsessed with her fashion and trends that I’m trying to mimic them within my own wardrobe.

Every morning I am compelled to highlight my cheekbones, smother my lips in red lipstick and outline my eyes in thick black eyeliner. It has become my new look and I am utterly loving it.

So to match this Madonna inspired makeup, I treated myself to some Madonna like sunglasses.

Pair No.1

11416451_10154064187132370_1344679680_o

These I bought from Next and I think they are absolutely stunning. They’re black, so they go with everything, but on the inside of the frame they have a turquoise tortoise  shell effect on them, which makes them that little bit more special. I feel as though they fit my face fine and don’t look too big, however they are on the large side, but this is purely due to the fact that they are slightly cat-eyed and therefore are supposed to come off your face a bit.

With Madonna in mind, I feel as thought they are a more modern take on the sunglasses that she wore in Desperately Seeking Susan (an extremely good film to watch if you haven’t already – and it will make you understand why I am in love with the 80s Madonna).

Pair No.2

12922209_10154064187172370_559714012_o

Now, I have never bought two pairs of sunglasses in the same day, or same season in fact! However I walked past these and HAD to get them. I’ve seen many similar looking ones in various vintage shops around the Norther Quarter in Manchester, however the ones I’ve tried on have always been a little lopsided on my face. But alas! These one’s in Debenhams fitted on my ears perfectly and so they were a must have. They are a bit more daring and I might have to rev myself up into wearing them out and about, but I absolutely love them. They are very retro looking and very plastic, which makes them quite groovy. Also, the colour is a slightly off shade of red, so aren’t too bright, but still hold a lot of impact. Not to mention the fact that they are pretty much the exact same shade as my lipstick.

I’ve been wanting these a long time before my Madonna craze came about, but I do recall her sporting some white heart shaped sunglasses in her Sticky Sweet tour.

Please let me know what you think of my new purchases… All I need now is the sun to wear them!

Have you bought any sunglasses in preparation for the summer?

Three ways to wear a Bandana

Hello everyone,

I have finally got a bandana! You have no idea how excited I am for this – I no longer have to wear toilet roll in my hair to pretend I’m some 80s punk-rock chick. I found this amazing seller on Ebay that sells these gorgeous hair ties for a reasonable price, so if you’re looking to purchase one take a look at the shop here. Once I have worn this one a few time, I’ll definitely be going back there for more… they are soo nice!

Anyway, since getting the bandana, I have discovered some other ways to wear it other than in your hair. Check them out and let me know what you think…

1. In your hair

Here I have done a quick up do to demonstrate how to tie a bandana into your hair. I feel as though this look doesn’t have to be the neatest  of looks. You can pull up your hair in a ponytail, bun or wrap and then wrap your bandana around your head, carefully twisting it into a knot at the top. I love how quirky this look is and how easy and fast it is to do. Very simple yet very effective.

2. Around your neck

I think this is such a funky way to wear a bandana. Since my friend introduced me to this style I have been completely in love. It adds that extra something to any outfit, especially if you’re wearing a low cut top, it really shows off this accessory. I think it looks super cool with a necklace on underneath it too.

3. On your wrist

This is something that the 80s fashion introduced me to. They were very much into wrapping as much around your wrist as you can (my style influence here obviously being Madonna). I think it looks quite boho and would look super cute in the summer paired with some denim jeans.

Let me know what you think of these three ways to wear a bandana and if you have styled it in any other way let me know in the comments section below!

TopShop Tall | Review

It has been a little while since I posted and I do apologise for that! It has been crazy at this end with my sister’s birthday, coming back to uni, starting the second semester. But now I’ve settled back in I will hopefully be posting more regularly. I have been wanting to do this post for some time now and am really excited to show you my new purchases.

A few weeks ago, TopShop had updated its ‘Tall’ section and oh my! I went a little bit crazy and spent some of my Christmas money on two new pairs of jeans and two leotards. It is amazing to get things that fit and are comfortable to wear, so sometimes when clothes are there in Tall, I have to get them.

You have no idea how long I have been waiting for Mom Jeans to come into 36″ length leg and here they are! I have been searching for these for ages and so I had to get them . i absolutely love these jeans. The cut is amazing as they are quite baggy but are still quite fitted making them still have that girly look to them. I love the fact they’re high waisted. I have no idea why, but I tend to go for high waisted jeans a lot more than low cut. I just think they’re more flattering.

Then I saw these… they are aubergine, but the light in my room doesn’t show off their colour too well – I’m sorry!! Anyway, take my word for it, they’re awesome. The fit is stunning. They’re jean material but very stretchy, almost like jeggings. But unlike jeggings they have a button, zip and pockets – which is a must have for jeans. I don’t know about you, but when I’ve seen jeggings I’ve always been put off by them not having pockets! Anyway, these jeans are gorgeous and because they’re stretchy they’re super comfy! They’re not too bright a purple either which means they go with almost everything. I haven’t washed them yet so I don’t know if the colour fades, however I will let you know if they do! But so far, so good.

Another thing I have always found hard to buy is leotards that are long enough in the body. But finally I have found these two funky ones in the Tall section of TopShop and they fit like a dream. It may sound stupid, but being tall and rather slim makes it extremely hard to find clothes that fit. So when these came into the store I whipped them up as fast as I could, and it couldn’t feel any better to have clothes that fit like a glove.

Let me know what you think of my purchases and please check out the Tall section of TopShop if you have struggle finding clothes that fit. I know a lot of stores don’t stock Tall items which is absolutely rubbish for girls like me. But I found out that if you go in store and ask a sales assistant to order online for you, it works out that it is free postage to your house. This makes a huge difference as you don’t have to pay for next day delivery which makes it ten times funner shopping online! Seriously check that system out… it’s great.

I hope this has shown you a little bit that is in the TopShop Tall section and has inspired some outfit choices.

You can purchase the items online here:
Mom Jeans, Aubergine jeans (aka, Auberjeans) – Oh no!! They’re out of stock 😦 But I found some very similar ones here, Stripey Leotard, Black Leotard

Knee high socks and Bear Trapper hat | Review

12506584_10153817408822370_148015095_n

Today I went shopping with my mum, hoping to find some good deals in the sales. However, I came across a bit of a problem where as I didn’t like what was in the sale but loved everything that wasn’t reduced. This tends to happen to me. Maybe it’s because I’m not that bothered about rummaging around all of the messy shelves, or I’ve bought everything I have wanted last season – which is normally the case, then I see it reduced to half price in the sale and it does break my heart a little bit.

But today I found one item in the sale that I do really love.

You will know by now that I am a little bit obsessed with hats. Bobble hats, Bowlers, Davy Crocketts… You name the hat, and I will probably have one. But this is something that I haven’t got and have been meaning to purchase for a long time.

I have never known this type of hat to be called a Bear Trapper before! I thought it was a Russian or Deer Stalker hat but this is what TopShop has it down as and so I’m going with it.

Today I got a Bear Trapper and oh my, it is so cosy! I know we will soon be heading into spring but I feel like when you live in the North you can get away with wearing hats right up until August, and even then it’s still acceptable!

This was from TopShop, in the sale at £5 – I mean you couldn’t even do better at Primark, right?

I think it is absolutely adorable and would go with any colour hair/complexion – which I must consider at the moment as I’m planning on dying my hair !!Scary!!

I got some really nice long length jumpers today, which I’m hoping to wear with this hat and some over the knee socks.

I must say though, if you have 36 inch legs, it is very hard to find over the knee socks and these literally just come to the right place. I could possibly do with them being a little bit longer so I could maybe fold the tops down, but for £3 from Primark they’re great and are super comfy.

If you’d like to purchase the hat you can still get it in the sale online here.

Please let me know what you think of my find… and if you’ve also found something cute in the sale.

Happy New Year | OOTD

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope you all had a fabulous night last night, I know I did!

I’m so glad to put 2015 behind me and move into a fresh year, it needs to be a good one. As for New Year resolutions, I don’t really have any, I turned my life around quite a bit at the end of last year, so I guess I should just carry on from that. Maybe lay off the sugary foods a little bit, but definitely to not let people get me down. That is something I must carry over from last year. 2015 was tough on that front, around late November I decided to no longer be afraid of what a few people thought of me and what I was doing.  This really did make my life so much better.

So if I was going to have resolutions, it would to be stronger in myself and to not be tempted by sugary foods!

Anyhow, I mentioned in one of my Blogmas posts that I found an adorable dress for New Years Eve in Miss Selfridge’s sale. I promised that I would show you this later on and here it is!! I must apologise for the photo quality… I had had some wine previous to these being taken teehee…

I think this is such a pretty dress and falls so lovely! I watch the TV series Vikings and Lagertha has dresses in this style (minus the shiney bits and a little bit longer) so I must admit, I did feel a little bit like a shield warrior last night. It is very flattering and I absolutely love the neck line. It’s just the perfect party dress!

You can purchase the dress here… I got the size 8 petite!

Let me know what you think and what your party outfit and resolutions are…

Much love ❤

Blogmas: Christmas Eve | OOTD

Hellooo Everyone!

It is Christmas Eve… I can’t believe Christmas has come round so fast, but I’m super excited and thought I would share with you what I’m wearing to our family get together today.

It’s all very much river island. My dress is from there (but I got it quite a few years ago, so I don’t know if they still have it!) and so are my socks!

I love adding some socks to an outfit, I think they look cosy and wintery…

My shirt is from Urban Outfitters. I put it on my wishliast last year for Christmas and Santa saw it and made sure I got it on! Maggiiiiic.

And of course my Elephant necklace…

Only one more post to go and then Blogmas is over! It has been extremely fun, I hope you have enjoyed it just as much as me!

Have a lovely Christmas Eve x

Blogmas: Day twenty | Home

hotdog (2)

It is finally settling in that I am home and home for quite some time. This is such a good feeling, you have no idea!

Today I went and met up with my friend Alex. We went and did some last minute Christmas shopping in town and fell upon this AMAZING American Diner which I think has just opened up. I ordered a hot dog, which was super yummy, and we shared a butterscotch milkshake. It was like drinking pure ice cream. Sooo gooood.

We wandered around the shops and I was constantly keeping my eyes peeled for a party dress that I could wear on New Years Eve. I had previously bought one, but it was in the Black Friday sales rush and so I didn’t have time to try it on. I wish I could say it was too big, however when I got it home I couldn’t even get the dress over my hips! As sad as it was, I had to return it. I’m sure they should start putting more zips in garments!

Anyway today I found the perfect dress (the silly thing is is that it was in the petite section of Miss Selfridge AND a smaller size than my other one) sizing makes no sense… But I liked this one better so in the end it all worked out well.

I would show you a picture but I might save that until nearer the time… But definitely check out the Miss Selfridge sales, they have some gorgeous items in at the moment.

When I got home I decided to unpack. I always hate this job as I accumulate so much at uni, that when I come home I find I have no space in my wardrobes for it!

12398285_10153782318502370_859845977_o

Look at how jam packed they are – and that’s not all of my clothes yet! Streeesss…

Anyway, I feel so much better for sorting my unpacking out and getting everything back in their right places again. My mind is somewhat more at ease.

I’m seeing a couple more of my friends tomorrow to give them their Christmas Pressies! I can’t wait to catch up with them, I haven’t seen them in ages and they’re both so ace! Home is treating me well… I hope you’re ll having a good run up to Christmas too x

Blogmas: Day eighteen | Christmas jumpers

10656295_10153777717297370_1760063259_n (2)

Every year on Christmas day, I normally get dressed up quite fancy in a cute little dress, or a nice floaty blouse. I love the whole idea of staying in and having a super cosy day but looking glamorous at the same times. However, this year me and my mum have decided to wear Christmas jumpers instead of a little dress.

You have no idea how excited I am for this. Don’t get me wrong, you can still look just as glamorous in a Christmas jumper, but the idea of being able to eat and drink as much as you can, and still stay comfy in the outfit that you’re in, is actually heavenly.

We didn’t want to spend too much on a Christmas jumper as you can only really wear them once a year, so we decided to hit Primark on our search.

12395181_10153777717362370_569806132_n (4)

I found this absolutely adorable one, with cute little penguins and love hearts on it. It is super soft and super cosy, there is no doubt that on Christmas I will be hot hot hot! It is quite fluffy which I think adds to the Christmasy winter feel. I like how this jumper is quite subtle, however still gets across the Christmas vibe. I love how crisp and snowy it looks. It’s the perfect Christmas jumper.

My mum decided to chose something a little less subtle but equally adorable.

1081433_10153777717542370_1266735068_n (3)

For me this is so sweet! The Gingerbread men (and lady) have little buttons for their eyes and a pompom on the Santa hat. I just love this attention to detail, it makes the jumper that extra bit special. It is knitted and looks really good quality – I was quite surprised as it is from Primark, but they have some really lovely Christmas jumpers in at the moment. I think the gingerbread men is again, subtle for Christmas however very not subtle at the same time! It’s great.

What I also love is the tag that is inside of the Jumper…

12386663_10153777717387370_1291798818_n (3)

I just think this is so nice and adds that little extra something to the jumper. Although you can purchase it for yourself, it would also make a really cute present for Christmas too.

These are just two of many Christmas jumpers out there! But I adore them both and I really hope you like them too! Please comment below with your Christmas Jumpers, I’d love to see what you’ve been wearing x

Blogmas: Day seventeen | Menswear

12388126_10153777717772370_1476426555_n (2)

I am so sorry I didn’t post yesterday – that was really bad of me. Buuut I had such a busy day: my last lecture, packing, coming home, unpacking – You get the idea… However me not being able to post yesterday means that you get two posts today! There’s always a silver lining.

Anyway, I am finally home for Christmas and it feels amazing. I’ve already been stuffed full with mince pies and yummy food, starting to get super Christmasy now – just need to shake this cold that I have seemed to pick up from somewhere.

Today me and my parents went shopping, and I came across the best thing ever! I have no idea why I haven’t thought about doing this yet, but better late than never I guess. I was wandering around the Men’s section in Next looking at all of their Christmas jumpers, when I came across their Pyjama isle (yeees this is a little follow on post from Blogmas day fourteen). I was having a browse through and found a small LONG pair of red and black pyjama pants. You have no idea how excited I was.

I quickly puled them out off the hanged and held them up to my legs. They looked as though they would be the perfect fit. There was no way I could leave them behind. I know Next is a little bit expensive so my first thought was to try Primark’s Men’s section. However, they were so perfect and so soft that my mum and dad kindly treated me to the pair. They know my troubles of finding pants that are long enough and so it’s kind of a get it whilst it’s there moment with things like this.

On the way to the till we started to check out all of the ‘Long’ sections. For a while now I have been wanting some tracksuit bottoms for those cosy days in where you lounge around the house. You kind of want to half make the effort and so don’t want to be in your Pjs all day, however, you still want to feel snug and comfy. I have not been able to find any tracksuits long enough and have searched high and low. But this was in the Women’s area. I hadn’t thought about checking the Men’s section. So in Next I came across a gorgeous pair of black tracksuit bottoms, in the size Small and Long. Just like the Pj pants, I had to get them. They were £22 but fit perfectly! And for some good quality tracksuits I don’t think that that is bad at all.

I had to spread the news about finding pants that are long enough as if you’ve been reading my blogs, you will know about my life long battle with this problem!

If you too have long legs I would really recommend checking out the Men’s section. It might be a bit daunting at first, but they have some really lovely things that could be for both male and females. Honestly, tonight was such a lucky find and I will most definitely be purchasing men’s pyjamas from now on.

Please let me know if you have the problem of having ultra long legs, and where you buy your clothes from!
